The Jolla - Ex-Nokia employees Smartphone

A team of ex-Nokia workers has released the first handset running on a new smart phone stage. The Jolla phone - marked Yol-la - is powered by open-source operating system Sailfish, but can run most apps intended for Google's Android platform. The corporation has paired with a major Finnish network, and hopes to set up a similar deal with a UK operator.

Industry analysts said Jolla faced a challenge in taking on a marketplace dominated by Google and Apple. Just 450 Jolla phones will be obtainable at launch on Wednesday evening, with the majority leaving to customers who have pre-ordered the device. According to the Co-founder Marc Dillon the phone's ethos was to provide a more open approach to how people used their mobiles, a contrast to the relatively closed systems used on the iPhone and, to a lesser extent, Android devices.

Mapping magnetic Earth with Satellite trio

Three European spacecraft will launch from northern Russia presently on a mission to make the most comprehensive global maps yet of Earth's magnetic field. Known as Swarm, the trio of satellites should help scientists comprehend better how the field is generated, and why it appears to be weakening.

The European Space Agency mission is going up from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome on a customized intercontinental ballistic projectile. Lift-off is timed for 12:02 GMT. The satellites are expected to split from the Breeze upper-stage of their Rocket launcher some 91 minutes later, at an elevation of 490km. A period of commissioning and testing will then follow before the Swarm starts their four-year measurement campaign.

World record broken: Quantum Memory

A delicate quantum memory state has been held steady at room temperature for a world record 39 minutes - overcoming a key barrier to ultrafast computers. Qubits of information set in a silicon system persisted for almost 100 times longer than still before. Quantum systems are disreputably fickle to measure and manipulate, but if harnessed could transform computing.

The new standard was set by an international team led by Mike Thewalt of Simon Fraser University, Canada. But in a quantum scheme, qubits are stored in a so-called superposition state in which they can be both 1s and 0 at the same time enabling them to perform multiple calculations concurrently. It's also a nice surprise that nothing goes wrong warming up and cooling the sample again - from an investigational point of view that's pretty significant.
